My buddy who’s worked with the UCOP said that apparently the UCOP and the Regents are by no means best buddies– UCOP is full of career academics, while the Regents are governor-appointed business types. Apparently it’s a little awkward to him when they lump together “the Administration” when really there’s internal politics going on there, too.

I’m pissed off at the protesters here at Berkeley. It’s a lot of empty, worthless rhetoric that does nothing except for cost the UC more money in hiring police protection for their students and buildings. My advisor’s work through the Academic Senate in stopping the subsidization of collegiate athletics was much more effective at generating change – she found an opportunity to fix things, went through the right venue, and pursued it.

Unfortunately this time the right venue wasn’t enough.
And “find the right venue”, while true, gets used by lazy administrators (on both sides) to blow off reform.
Which is exactly how we got to this problem in the first place – lazy career administrators pushing off needed changes until it was too late.

I’ve worked on things like that where dogged perseverance worked, but after a point, something big has to be done. It should cost the UC money at the very least. It should inconvienience people at least 23%
